Q: What is the difference between automotive waxes and marine waxes? A: Meguiar's Marine Products are specifically formulated for Gel-coat and linear polyurethane (LP) surfaces which are chemically different from automotive paints. Modern gel-coats and LP coatings are harder and more water resistant than automotive paints. Their unique chemical compositions demand special ingredients be used that are specific to these tough Marine surfaces. Automotive products will not achieve the same high quality results as the Meguiar's Marine line. Q: How do you take care of a boat that has been repainted? A: The types of paints used in the boat repair and refinishing industry are chemically similar to the types of resins and coatings used in the boat manufacturing industry. Boats that have been repainted should be maintained using products chemically formulated for Marine application. Q: How do I take care of my Plexiglas, Eisenglass, or other clear plastic windows? A: The biggest concerns when working with clear plastics is how to safely maintain them, without incurring scratches. Meguiar's guarantees that under identical conditions, our wax will outlast the competition. Q: What is the difference between polishes and waxes? A: Meguiar's polishes are what we call true polishes. They contain nutrient-rich, conditioning oils which restore and maintain the life of the surface. They bring out the full color and gloss of a finish while helping to prevent oxidation and chemical attack. The primary function of a wax is to provide a protective barrier that seals or locks the natural oils into the gelcoat and LP coating. Besides locking these natural oils into the surface, this protective barrier protects the surface from external contaminants and other corrosive elements. The Marine waxes are highly water-resistant and contain UV inhibitors. Q: What are the differences between wool and foam buffing pads? A: Traditional wool pads are best used for heavy cutting. The fibers themselves act like abrasives and work together with buffing chemicals to cut the finish. For this reason, they will never leave as nice a finish as a foam pad. Meguiar's foam pads, with their open-cell structure, are better at polishing the surface to a high gloss without the swirl problems typically associated with wool buffing pads.		Q: Why shouldn't I use dish washing soaps or car washes to clean my boat? A: Dish washing soaps contain detergents that are too harsh for the finish on your boat. They will strip off any wax protection you have and leach out the natural oils found in the gel-coat or LP coatings. This will leave them susceptible to oxidation and chemical attack. Common car wash solutions often use detergents for their cleaning ability and while they may clean really well, they too will strip off your wax protection and leach out the protective oils from your finish. Q: Why does Meguiar's suggest using 100% cotton terry cloth towel or an Ultimate Wipe instead of a diaper rag or T-shirt? A: Terry cloth toweling and microfiber polishing cloths have a surface made up on individual fibers and fiber loops called the "nap". This fibrous nap has many benefits over a material that has a flat surface such as a rag, diaper, or T-shirt Unlike a cloth with a flat surface, the nap can hold more product because of its increased surface area. The nap has a cushioning effect that a cloth with a flat surface does not have, making it softer and more gentle to the surface. The nap has a depth to it so any abrasive particles present can push into the nap, whereas with a flat surface, the particle is pushed across the surface, potentially scratching it.
